Millie The Narrowboat Millie, launched by comedian Les Dennis in 2001, is owned and operated by The Vale of Llangollen Canal Boat Trust (Canal Boats for Disabled People). The Trust was formed in 1983 and is run on a voluntary basis apart from a skipper and a part-time office administrator. At 70 feet long, Millie is fitted out to allow disabled people to enjoy a canal holiday and under normal use can provide holiday accomodation for six people (including helpers). During the course of our journey we will be providing day trips for up to four disabled people at one time, each to bring with them one helper. Although funds were initially obtained from the Lotteries Commission towards the purchase of Millie, the Trust is entirely dependant on donations to cover the running costs, and on voluntary support to keep these running costs (which are in excess of £20,000 per year) down. This sum does not make any allowance for replacing the boat when it becomes necessary. The Trust also operates "Glas-y-Dorlan", a smaller boat which provides day trips from Trevor Basin, near Wrexham, for disabled and disadvantaged people. Each boat is fitted with a hydraulic lift to assist wheelchairs aboard and both have toilet and washing facilities designed for disabled people. Their windows are large and set low to provide a good clear view of the canal.
